JULIE WILSON (@BookMadam) is a writer and professional fan. She's the curator of the literary voyeurism project Seen Reading, founder of Book Madam & Associates, recent guest host of the CBC Book Club, and past Online Content Manager for House of Anansi Press. In June 2010, she'll publish her first book — Truly, Madly, Deadly: The Unofficial True Blood Companion — with ECW Press under the pen name Becca Wilcott.

Julie's inaugural pick for social media bright idea: Kathryn Borel Jr.'s book trailers for Corked

At their best, book trailers overwhelm the book they're intended to promote. At their worst, they're insider cliches that isolate the mainstream reader. Then there are the trailers that make me sit up and take notice.

Case in point, Kathryn Borel Jr., who stars in her book trailers for Corked. The book is her memoir, full of existential dread, wine, family strife, travel, and, for reals, a car accident that ends in death. Who else but Borel could represent that tale? She's compelling to watch, at once author, expert, character, host, and bon vivant. You're not just getting a synopsis of the narrative — along with two great "How To" videos  — you're getting it delivered in the unique, sophisticated, and, at times, pained voice of its narrator.

And you know what that translates into? Readers wanting to see her in person. Offline, Borel has participated in a number of events that pair readings with cooking, tastings, and creative writing. It's media that's been been used to create social circumstances out of which people are buying her book. And along the way, she's generating the kind of WOM buzz that first-time authors dream for.

Enjoy. Then buy the book.
